Young family future-proof by taking a step up at Crest Nicholson’s Calne development

Posted 9 March 2020

Many young families looking to future-proof and step up the ladder into their ‘forever’ home seek the perfect village setting within the catchment area of excellent local schools...

For Zoe Armstrong (29) and her husband John (34), this was certainly the case when house-hunting for a new-build home to suit their growing family’s needs. The couple have recently upsized into a beautiful five bedroom home with their two young children Isabelle (3) and Bertie (1), as well as pet dog Bonnie, at Crest Nicholson’s popular Bowood Gate development in Calne, Wiltshire.

Zoe explains:

“We lived in a village 15 minutes away, in a much older three bedroom cottage, which we had completely renovated. The main reason for moving was to step up into a family-sized house, which we could settle into and future-proof as our forever home. Having previously renovated, we wanted a home that we could move straight into and not have to do any DIY. What really drew us to Bowood Gate was the amount of open space; our house is set back from the road and has a large back garden – so it doesn’t feel like a typical new development.”

Located in a picturesque rural setting within Wiltshire, Bowood Gate has an established community. Residents benefit from the convenient location close to excellent local schools and amenities, with fantastic commuter links to Chippenham, Swindon and beyond.

Zoe adds:

“Location was a major factor – we wanted to be close to the great schools in the area and the station. The village school Derry Hill Church of England has been awarded Outstanding by OFSTED so being within the catchment area was a big drawing point for us.”

Zoe continues:

“We were the first to buy off-plan on development in July 2018, therefore we were able to select the exact plot we wanted in terms of position, layout and size. We used Help to Buy which is great, our new home is the perfect forever home.”

Speaking on what drew them to the specific house-type, Zoe said:

“When we renovated our old house, we knocked down a couple of walls to create an open-plan space which was really important to us. So, when looking for a new home we wanted enough space for a growing family to all spend time together. We have a sitting-room which we can make cosy this Christmas, whilst the kitchen and family area is a great play-space for the kids, where we can keep an eye on them. We’re using the spare room now as a study and we have a much larger garden than before.”

Moving to a new development offers all the benefits of a close knit community, as Zoe mentions:

“As we were the first to buy, I set up a Facebook Page for residents moving in so everyone could get to know their neighbours, which has been lovely. As more people have moved in, there’s such a community feel. It’s been brilliant for us as there’s a couple of other young families, who we see at pre-school as well, which will be great as the children grow up.

“We literally just walk across the road to pre-school, which backs onto the primary school. The local village shop and post office are both within easy reach. Chippenham is our closest bigger town and has everything we need to hand but for family days out, we’re also close to Swindon, Bath and Bristol.”

Only one four bedroom home is available at Bowood Gate for £450,000.
