Second Home For Couple in Bristol at Huller & Cheese

After meeting at the student union in Bristol 50 years ago, a semi-retired couple were inspired to head back to the city where they met to purchase a second home for holidaying.

Penny and Michael Thomson, who have three grown up children and three grandchildren, are among 3.4m homeowners who own a second home.

They purchased their ‘holiday’ apartment at Generator South West’s Huller & Cheese development because they felt it was the perfect base to meet up with family, enjoy city life and trips to the theatre. They also saw the property as an investment in their children’s future, and say they view it as a practice run of downsizing, which is something they may do in the future.

The Huller & Cheese development is located in a restored warehouse on the banks of the floating harbour in Bristol. The couple live in a country house in the Somerset countryside, where they have been for 33 years, but they enjoy spending time in the busy city of Bristol.

The couple purchased their two-bedroom apartment off-plan for £425,000 after seeing the brochure and liking the interior design and river views.

Penny says: “We thought it would be a shock to live in a smaller space than what we are used to. However, the move has brought us closer together as we are spending more time in each other’s company. We like to sit on the balcony and watch the boats and ferries go past too.

“The apartment is big enough to host friends for lunch and have family to stay.  The finish of the homes is very good and we were welcomed with a bottle of champagne from Generator South West, which was a nice touch. It is a great place to stay and it’s giving us lots of practice for when we finally decide to sell our other home.”

Generator South West converted the Grade II Listed Huller House and the former Cheese Factory next door, on Bristol’s floating harbour. Huller House, which dates from the mid-19th century features a distinctive traditional 19th century façade, including oversized double doors, which were originally used for loading goods on to merchant ships, as well as exposed brick and ironworks.

Only four penthouse apartments remain at Huller & Cheese, priced from £650,000.
