Support, Security, And Friendship Found At Retirement Village

Posted 28 August 2020 by Keith Osborne

Aileen downsized and moved to Hampshire Lakes just before lockdown to enjoy the benefits of a close-knit community...

Fortunately for Aileen Hanley, she made her move to Anchor Hanover’s Hampshire Lakes retirement village just in time before lockdown measures were put in place, enabling her to enjoy the benefits of a close-knit community during these difficult times.

Aileen moved into her brand new two-bedroom home just three days before lockdown. She explained: “Moving at that time ended up being somewhat chaotic as my son was due to come over from Canada to help me but could not travel. Fortunately, I had a very close friend and some lovely neighbours who stepped in and helped me.”

Hampshire Lakes was already familiar to Aileen who has a friend living in the village with whom she had visited for lunches in the onsite restaurant, and it was one of these visits that ended with her deciding to make a move:

“I wasn’t on the lookout for a new home but after lunch with my friend she suggested I look at the show apartment and I was very impressed. I came back the following week and had a chat with Tracey in the sales office.

“I had been living in a four-bedroom house and due to health problems the stairs were becoming more difficult. It was hard leaving my beautiful, well-established garden but it was becoming difficult to manage.”

Since moving Aileen has been made to feel very welcome and part of the community with regular socially distant chats with neighbours and support from those nearest to her to help her settle into a new way of life.

Aileen continued: “My new neighbours are very friendly and have been welcoming and helpful. I have not felt lonely since I moved here and that is really important, had I been in my old home I would’ve had to stand at the front door and talk to friends in the road but here we can sit outside and chat. Since moving here I have re-planted the front garden to my taste using some of the plants I bought with me and sourcing others online. Everyone around me seems to enjoy gardening and with time on our hands we have been improving the communal gardens.”

Hampshire Lakes boasts an abundance of outdoor space to explore which has been great for Aileen and her dog Lottie, a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. Additionally, on the outskirts of the development is the beautiful Trilakes country park for a little more exploring.

Making the decision to downsize can be difficult but for Aileen living by herself in a large property which was becoming unmanageable on her own, the decision was the right one. Aileen added: “I’m looking forward to the facilities reopening, especially the swimming pool!”

Hampshire Lakes is a vibrant retirement village in the town of Yateley in Hampshire, boasting stunning lakeside surroundings and a range of one- and two-bedroom independent living apartments. At the heart of the village is a state-of-the-art wellness centre with a fully equipped gymnasium, heated swimming pool and spa, as well as a village bistro and delicatessen. Care and support packages are also available for residents, should they need them.
