A family home thanks to Help to Buy

Posted 10 June 2016 by Helen Christie

As mortgage advisors, Gary Boakes and Michelle Hammond know all about the benefits of Help to Buy...

The couple, who are engaged to be married in August, had no hesitation in using the Help to Buy scheme to purchase their first home together.

Gary, 35, and Michelle, 32, have bought a four-bedroom detached house at Bloor Homes’ King’s Gate development in Amesbury, upsizing from a three-bedroom semi-detached rented property in nearby Durrington.

With five children between them, the couple were keen to move into a larger property, and said a new build was always the preferred option, especially as it meant they could take advantage of Help to Buy.

Being able to secure the home with just a 5% and 75% mortgage, and the remaining 20% being provided as an equity loan, which is interest free for the first five years, was a massive plus for the couple, especially with a wedding on the horizon.

Gary says: “Most of my time at work is spent advising people about Help to Buy so I know just how great the scheme is. For us, it was the easiest and quickest way to move into a four-bedroom house without renting.

“We were in the throes of saving for a wedding when we decided to buy a house, so being able to do it with a 5% deposit made it much more affordable. It also helps to keep the monthly mortgage payments down.

“When Michelle and I got together I brought two extra kids with me at the weekend so with four boys in one room it was getting a little cramped. We needed something with a bit more space and we had a preference for new build as Help to Buy is the easiest and quickest way to get on the ladder.

“The quality of the Bloor Homes is a cut above and when this property became available it just seemed like fate. We love the open-plan kitchen/diner which really lends itself to family living, and the fact all four bedrooms are a really good size. We’re in a great spot overlooking a field, we’ve got all the amenities we need on our doorstep, and Salisbury is only a 15-minute drive away. As for the process of buying the house, the sales advisors were all really helpful and everything went through smoothly and quickly.”
