New homes variety reinforces Woking’s appeal for London commuters

Posted 19 June 2017 by Helen Christie

The town's frequent and fast rail connections to London make it a prime choice for a convenient new home for commuters...

Around 23 miles to the south-west of central London, in the western part of Surrey, one of Woking’s major attractions to London workers looking for a new home outside the capital is the frequency of fast trains, with a journey time into the capital just 27 minutes on many services.

Woking station is a hub for South West Trains, a major stop on local services and the longer distance routes to Portsmouth, Southampton and Weymouth. With a monthly season ticket from Woking to London (travelcard zones 1-6) at £374.40 and an annual at £3,900, commuters might look at it as good value given how many trains they are able to choose from.

Woking also makes a good based from which to travel further away from London, with frequent services throughout the day to Guildford (8-10 minutes, £99.10 per month, £1,032 per year), Basingstoke (18 minutes, £330 per month, £3,400 per year) and Southampton (49 minutes, £461.20 per month, £4,804 per year).

The town is also very well placed for road users, with the M3 and M25 close by bringing even long-distance destinations within easy reach. Southampton is under an hour away, Heathrow just 30 minutes journey time, and Gatwick around 45 minutes.

Woking Borough Council has earmarked an area of land in Martyrs Lane for development between 2027 and 2040, with plans for at least 1,200 new homes to be built.
