New homes variety reinforces Woking’s appeal for London commuters
Posted 11 January 2016 by Keith Osborne
Around 23 miles to the south-west of central London, in the western part of Surrey, one of Woking’s major attractions to London workers looking for a new home outside the capital is the frequency of fast trains, with a journey time into the capital under 28 minutes on many services.
Woking station is a hub for South West Trains, a major stop on local services and the longer distance routes to Portsmouth, Southampton and Weymouth. With a monthly season ticket at £296 and an annual at £3,080, commuters might look at it as good value given how many trains they are able to choose from.
Woking also makes a good based from which to travel further away from London, with frequent services throughout the day to Guildford (8-10 minutes, £98 per month, £1,016 per year), Basingstoke (18 minutes, £324 per month, £3,376 per year) and Southampton (55 minutes, £453 per month, £4,716 per year).
The town is also very well placed for road users, with the M3 and M25 close by bringing even long-distance destinations within easy reach. Southampton is under an hour away, Heathrow just half-an-hour and Gatwick 45 minutes.
The local council’s West Surrey Strategic Housing Market (SHMA) report in the last quarter of 2015 recognised the need for 517 new homes a year in and around Woking. The Core Strategy currently adopted by the council aims for around 5,000 homes in the period 2010-2027, just over half the number recommended in SHMA report, with around 35% of them targeted to be ‘affordable’.
