Expanding Swindon offers superb choice of new homes

Situated midway between Bristol and Reading, both of which are about 40 miles away, the fast-growing Wiltshire town of Swindon is a convenient place to live for those commuting across the South West - or doing business in nearby London.

The town's economy is largely driven by major employers such as Honda, BMW/Mini, Motorola, WH Smiths, and all but one of the national Research Councils. It is also a major transport hub, situated on the London Paddington to Bristol railway line, and benefits from being close to the M4 corridor. With a lively entertainment scene and a great choice of shops and modern housing, Swindon is a popular place to set up home.

Two popular new developments in Swindon are The Sidings, just northeast of the centre and about a mile from the train station, and Wichestowe, just south of the centre, and about a mile-and-a-half from the train station.

The Sidings

The Sidings incorporates new homes situated on the old Great Western Railway sports ground. For a good mix of first time buyer and family homes, Barratt Homes' The Sidings offers a choice of one- to four-bedroom homes, priced from £155,995. These properties are only about a mile-and-a-half from Swindon's town centre, and there are superb links for commuters nearby, as well as lovely parks and a choice of schools, making it an ideal location for families with children. The new Government-backed Help to Buy scheme is available, aimed at both first-time buyers and existing homeowners, enabling buyers to purchase a new home with a deposit of just 5%.

Just around the corner, David Wilson Homes also has a collection of two- and three-bedroom homes at The Sidings, priced from £187,000. There are several buyer incentive schemes available, including Part Exchange for existing homeowners and the Government-backed FirstBuy and NewBuy schemes. Centred around a central mews street and surrounded by carefully-planned, leafy landscaped areas, buyers will again benefit from the development's close proximity to Swindon's town centre and a wide range of transport links.

Wichelstowe

A large new community is being created at Wichelstowe in Swindon, just a mile or so from the town centre, which will eventually be home to around 4,500 homes - as well as new schools for local children, employment spaces, community facilities, places of worship, retail and commercial units, and an attractive extension to the Wiltshire and Berkshire canal.

Barratt Homes' Wichelstowe canal-side development incorporates a range of uniquely-designed one- to five-bedroom homes, again targeting a wide range of buyers. Priced from £194,995, these properties are in the ideal location for buyers who want to be conveniently close to the town centre, but at the same time be able to walk out of their front door and enjoy open spaces - while commuters will benefit from having the M4 motorway just four miles away.

Just over a mile away from Barratt's development, Persimmon's Persimmon @ Wichelstowe packs in 23 different house styles, with a selection of two- to five-bedroom homes suiting a diverse range of buyers. Priced from £259,995, 95% mortgages are available with the NewBuy scheme. All homes come with either a garage or a designated parking space, and again the town centre and M4 are both close by.

Also in this area of the town, Taylor Wimpey's Wichelstowe development has two- to five-bedroom homes priced from £200,000 up to £335,000, with the Government-backed Help to Buy scheme available to help eligible buyers purchase a new home there.
