2021: The year of the ‘work/life’ balance buyer

Press release: 11.11.2021

Fresh data from the UK’s leading new home audience platform Whathouse? confirms that 2021 has been the year of the ‘work/life balance’ buyer – those emerging from lockdown with plans to make positive lifestyle changes that to enable them to enjoy more quality time in their homes.

The pandemic ‘lifestyle refocus trend’ has seen an increase in demand for luxury homes, with people seeking on site gyms, work spaces, cinema rooms, cafes, cycle paths, walkways and community spaces where people can enjoy a better work life balance.   Additionally, new hybrid working arrangements and people’s reinvigorated desire to connect with nature has driven an outward migration from cities, increasing demand for suburban homes that is largely being met by the new homes sector.

Daniel Hill, Managing Director, WhatHouse? comments:

“The impact of the ‘lifestyle refocus’ trend is something we’ve seen over the past 20 months, with new home demand for luxury properties reaching a peak during 2021. Buyers needs are evolving, as companies formalise long-term home working models, people are now able to make lifestyle changes with confidence.  For some this is simply about upscaling to accommodate a home office, for others it’s about relocating to a more rural setting and a new build home that provides home gym, larger landscaped gardens and flexible home entertaining areas.”

Donna Smith, Sales Director, Wavensmere Homes comments:

“Now more than ever, we are seeing purchasers making their buying decisions based upon work / life balance and amenity space on new build sites. Today’s post-pandemic buyers look for much more than just a home, they seek community, lifestyle, sustainability and amenity and consequently their buying decisions focus on these key elements.”
