Shared Ownership is a government-backed scheme designed to help first-time buyers purchase affordable new homes. It is a scheme that is particularly relevant to buyers in London due to the high property prices. The buyer initially purchases between 25% and 75% of the market value of the property, using a deposit and mortgage. The homeowner then pays a subsidised rent on the remainder, and will have the option to buy an increased share of the property at a later date (a process which is known as staircasing).
