Commuter homes in Maidstone – what can you get for your money?

Just 32 miles south-east of London, the prosperous town of Maidstone in Kent offers good value compared with Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks – as well as some great primary and secondary schools, and good rail and road links for commuters. The countryside of the High Weald is close by, too, while the seaside is only half an hour's drive away.

The town is served by three stations: Maidstone West and Maidstone Barracks on the Medway Valley Line (within view of each other); and Maidstone East, the more northerly station, which is on the London to Ashford line. The journey from Maidstone East station to London Victoria can take as little as 57 minutes, and a 12-month season ticket to London Zones 1-6 costs £4,224. The car park has 524 spaces with an annual parking rate of £905, and there are cycle stands for up to 50 bikes on Platform 1.

By road, Maidstone is served by the M20 to the north of the town, with many towns and further road links within easy reach – including Ashford (30 minutes), Folkestone (40 minutes), the M25 (30 minutes) and central London (about an hour and 15 minutes). The M2 to Thanet is eight miles north.

As is the case with many towns within commuting distance of London, the population has grown significantly since the 1960s.
