Make Your Move In 2020 With An Off-Plan Purchase

Posted 26 February 2020 by Keith Osborne

To help those considering a move in 2020, our Housebuilder of the Year talks about buying a new home off-plan...

For many experienced homebuyers, nothing beats the feeling of walking into a brand new home complete with pristine paintwork, fresh, thick-piled carpets and immaculate white goods and sanitary ware.

Buying new has so many benefits that it’s now the only way to buy for countless seasoned movers. From providing a completely blank canvas for the ultimate fresh start, to being able to customise your home ahead of moving (particularly when you buy off-plan), there’s so much to love about buying new.

To help those considering a move in 2020, Barratt and David Wilson Homes – crowned WhatHouse? Housebuilder of the Year in 2019 – has shared their favourite reasons why buying new is a great choice.

Blank canvas

The most obvious reason, of course, is having a blank canvas to make unmistakably yours. Where older homes can often come with lived-in carpets, wallpaper somebody else picked or finishes that require a bit of TLC, a new home gives you a clean slate upon which you can show off your tastes and interests or explore the latest trends from the outset.

What’s more, with a new home bought off-plan you have the opportunity to choose all your kitchen and bathroom fittings, flooring and a range of other added extras from a wide selection of options that are bound to fit your vision for your home. For many buyers, this is their favourite part of the buying process as it brings their new home to life.

David Wilson Homes is currently marketing homes for sale off-plan at its new St Clair Mews development in Roslin. Buyers here can choose from a range of layouts – such as the fou-bedroom ‘Dalmally’ with integral garage, or the detached ‘Glenbervie’, available from £470,995, with its four double bedrooms, two en suites and spacious lounge – as well as more than 15 kitchen door options, 10 different worktops, 10 tile ranges and over 32 carpet styles.

Ready for you from day one

The other major plus point for buyers is the fact new homes can be kitted out with your chosen carpets and finishes before you even receive your keys. This means that on moving day, you can get straight to work on settling in, rather than having to waste time on getting basic comforts in place.

At Barratt Homes’ Thornton View development in East Kilbride, buyers can incorporate a wide range of additional essentials into their home design, from fitted wardrobes and heated towel rails to additional plug points and security systems. This means that, once you’ve moved, you don’t need to worry about all the extra hard work and disruption these investments in your home can make.

Environmental benefits

Minimising the impact our daily lives have on the world around us is a cause that’s close to our hearts. Fortunately, it’s safe to say that new homes are greener homes. Modern building standards make stringent requirements in relation to energy efficiency, materials and insulation, which means new build homes are not only cheaper to heat and power, but they also produce less waste and use fewer natural resources during construction.

In addition to its commitment to meeting all the environmental requirements of a modern housebuilder, Barratt Homes actively contributes towards the environmental wellbeing of the communities it serves. For example, across Scotland it has invested in tree planting and wildlife-friendly landscaping as well as other innovative projects, which include bringing a wildlife rich stream back to life and installing renewable energy systems such as solar panels on its homes.

Customer service, long after you get your keys

Finally, when purchasing a new build home, you can be assured of having the support of your housebuilder while you settle into your home, which is more than you can say for the brief grace period you can expect when you buy an older home. This means that if you have any questions or snagging requirements there will always be someone available to help, whereas with an older home, you’re more than likely to be left to fend off any problems yourself after around 10 days.

Customers of both Barratt and David Wilson Homes regularly comment on the support they receive from sales advisors and onsite teams.

For example, Andrew McMorrine, who, with his wife Jan, relocated to Inverness with the purchase of a four bedroom ‘Balmoral’ at Ness Castle development, recently commented: “The whole buying process was made wonderfully straightforward by the excellent work of Barratt Homes’ highly skilled and personable team. The customer service we received was always of the highest standard and both Jan and I love the community, our neighbours and our home.”
