Billingshurst is an ideal village choice for commuters

Posted 19 December 2016 by Ben Salisbury

Billingshurst is a vibrant village near beautiful Sussex countryside, close to interesting towns and just over an hour from London for commuters...

According to a recent survey by property agents Strutt & Parker, a village was seen as the most popular place to live with 21% naming it as their preferred location.

Billingshurst is an ideal village location at the heart of Sussex Weald, eight miles from Horsham and just over five miles north-east of Pulborough. It boasts a vibrant, close-knit community with excellent schools and amenities. With mainline train services to London in just over an hour it’s popular with commuters looking for the best of both worlds.

There’s a good selection of properties for sale in the area including sought-after new detached family homes, picturesque 16th Century farmhouses, period cottages and estates.

Still standing today in the village are over 20 timber-framed farm buildings dating from the Middle Ages when the village’s small population mainly comprised of farmers and innkeepers and tradesmen such as brewers, millers and blacksmiths. The arrival of the railway in the 1800s opened up communications and in the early 1900s more services such as a post office and banks were established. The village was expanded in the 1950s with new schools, a surgery and housing, as well as the bypass to the motorway.

Billingshurst has a good variety of independent shops, restaurants and pubs. The Six Bells is a 16th century coaching inn in the middle of Billingshurst High Street. The village is also conveniently located within easy reach of the historic market town of Horsham which offers further extensive shopping facilities, restaurants and entertainment.

There are also several leisure facilities available in the area including the Billingshurst leisure centre with its swimming pool complex and popular tennis club. Jubilee Fields contains football pitches, two cricket pitches and pavilion, a fishing lake, and an exercise path. In the last year a new skatepark has also been added. Other facilities in the village include a lawn bowling club.

The village has an excellent range of primary schools including Billingshurst Infant and Junior Schools. For secondary, the Weald School is a high performing technology and sports specialist school. Private schools in the area include Penthorpe Preparatory School and Christ’s Hospital a co-ed boarding and day school.
