Shared Ownership: FAQ
How does Shared Ownership help first-time buyers?
Many first-time buyers find that property prices rise so quickly that they are unable to save a high enough deposit. Part rent part buy means that they are able to save a deposit much more easily, as this method of purchase can require as little as 5% deposit on the share you are buying.

Since the minimum share for purchasing is usually 25%, this makes purchasing much more accessible. For example, if you were buying a 25% share of a property costing £400,000, this would need a deposit of only £5,000 (5% of 25%), compared to a 10% deposit (£40,000) if buying the same property in full.
