Excellent range of new homes on offer in Bedford today

Posted 15 August 2013

Bedford is an attractive town standing on the banks of one of the most accessible and beautiful stretches of the River Great Ouse, offering residents an excellent range of housing, good communications and educational facilities, and plenty of shops and leisure amenities. It's home to two railway stations, the A6 road, and an extensive network of bus services.

The town also has a lively cultural scene, with well-established venues such as Bedford Corn Exchange and Esquires, and regular big events such as Bedford by the Sea, Proms in the Park, Bedford International Kite Festival, the Bedford Regatta, and the River Festival.

There is a good choice of new developments both on the fringes of Bedford and in surrounding towns and villages, with options to suit first-time buyers right through to large families.

Just a few miles west of the centre of Bedford and 15 miles from Milton Keynes, Barratt Homes' Regency-inspired Greenkeepers Mews offers a country setting for its range of two-, three- and four-bedroom homes. Appealing to first-time buyers and those with growing families, the development has homes priced for most budgets, starting from £208,500. Biddenham Vale Country Park and Biddenham Village are just a short walk away; there are two supermarkets within a five-minute drive; and nearby is Kempston Rural Lower School for families with children. Commuters can take the new A421 east to Bedford and the A1, or west to Milton Keynes and the M1.

Less than a mile down the road, David Wilson Homes has created The Fairways, an elegant collection of impressive three- to five-bedroom homes built in classic styles, priced from £159,995 to £514,995. Located next to the golf course and surrounded by lovely countryside and Bedfordshire villages, a local bus service runs through The Fairways into Bedford, and the development is home to a brand new school, with a nursery being built. With the Help to Buy scheme, first time buyers or existing homeowners can buy a new home with a deposit of just 5% and a 20% equity loan.

For buyers on a tighter budget, David Wilson has another new development in the large but pleasant village of Kempston, less than three miles south west of Bedford town centre. Bedford Meadows incorporates a range of two-bedroom apartments and three- and four-bedroom houses that will appeal to both first time buyers and families - with local schools within walking distance. Priced from £124,995, Bedford Meadows is also a convenient choice for commuters, offering easy access to the M1 and to Bedford station, which has services reaching London within 40 minutes.

Also in Kempston, Barratt Homes has built Cygnet Mews, which also has potential options for first time buyers, with homes from as little as £117,500; and De Balliol Court, a small development of three- to five-bedroom homes priced from £199,500, situated on the edge of the village, with family homes that reflect local rural traditions.

The nearby town of St Neots, a picturesque market town 14 miles from Bedford, just over the county border in Cambridgeshire, offers an alternative for those who would prefer to be located closer to Cambridge, which is 16 miles away. Redrow's Priory Gardens offers luxury specification homes in a traditional setting priced from £339,950.
