Amenities

There is a local Co-op store in the village for your day to day needs, with a Sainsbury’s in Cheddar and a choice of supermarkets, including Morrisons, in Weston Super Mare.

The village has its own GP surgery as well as a choice of two dentists. For doctors, register with Winscombe Family Practice on Hillyfields Way (Sat Nav BS25 1AF, call 01934 842211) or for dentists choose either Winscombe Dental Practice or Honeycomb Dental Practice, both on Sandford Road (call 01934 842230 or 01934 842573).

Dining

As is often the case in villages like Winscombe, the best dining locations are to be found in old country pubs and inns. The Woodborough Inn in the village and the Sidcot Arms, a Brewers Fayre pub, are both well worth a visit locally, as are The New Inn at Cross, The Railway Inn at Sandford and The Bath Arms in Cheddar.

Winscombe also has a choice of charming tearooms, including the Pantry Café and Charlottes, with plenty more to be found in the nearby villages.

With an eye firmly on the tourist trade, Cheddar has an excellent choice of eateries within easy reach of Winscombe, including Lao Thai, Edelweiss, Franks and Café George.

Education

Often, choosing a rural location means compromising on education, but not in Winscombe. Here you’ll find outstanding schools for all ages, in both the state and private sectors. Winscombe Primary is rated ‘good with many outstanding features’ by Ofsted, while nearby Sandford Primary is rated ‘outstanding’ across the board. Older pupils are just as well catered for with Churchill Academy and Sixth Form, a short bus ride away, rated ‘outstanding’.

For independent pupils, Sidcot School in Winscombe is highly regarded, and offers day-place private schooling for boys and girls right through from nursery to sixth form.

Leisure

Winscome has a proud sense of community, with competitive football and cricket teams as well as a range of other activities available at the popular community centre. There are two enchanting village fairs held each year, celebrating May Day and Michaelmas in December. Head out of the village and you’ll have miles of AONB countryside to explore, helped by the Mendip Outdoor Pursuits and Snowsport Centre.

For a great family day out, head for the coast at Weston Super Mare, just 8 miles away, or the caves at Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole, which are even closer. The mysterious history of Glastonbury is well worth investigating, as is the famous music festival held there each year.

For evening entertainment, the Roxy community cinema in Axbridge offers a unique experience, while Weston provides more mainstream films at its Odeon and Cineworld multiplexes.

Shopping

There is a small selection of shops in the village, including The Wine Shop, which holds regular tasting evenings. For a wider selection, head for Weston Super Mare, where you’ll find the Sovereign Shopping Centre and Gallagher Retail Park.

For a touch of true retail therapy, even the most hardened shopaholic couldn’t ask for more than Bristol, with endless shopping malls and arcades in the central Shopping Quarter, including the famous Cabot’s Circus.

Clarks Village in Street and Kilver Court in Shepton Mallet both offer designer labels at discount prices and are well worth the trip.

Transport

Winscombe lies on the A38 and A371, with excellent road links across the area. The M5 is within easy reach, with Bristol just 14miles, Glastonbury just 16miles and Bath and Taunton both around 28miles. The coastal attractions and rail links of Weston Super Mare are just 8miles away.

There are regular busses linking the village to all the main local towns, as well as regular services to Bristol Airport, just 10miles away and Bristol city centre beyond.
