For doctors, register with Chawton park Surgery, just half a mile away (Sat nav GU34 1RJ, call 01420 542 542) while dentists can be found at Lenten Street Dental Centre (Sat Nav GU34 1HG, call 01420 541 716).

Dining

Alton has an excellent selection for your dining pleasure, with something to suit every taste and budget, from fine dining to friendly gastro pubs, from chain restaurants like Pizza Express and Prezzo, to exclusive independent establishments.

River Kwai (Asian and Thai) and Monty’s Bistro (British and Spanish) come highly recommended, as do the gastro pubs The George, The Greyfriar and the Selbourne Arms.

For an extra special treat, head south to Petersfield, deep in the National Park, for Michelin Star dining at JWS.

Education

Alton has an excellent choice of schools for all ages, all rated good or outstanding by Ofsted. The Butts Primary, Alton Infants and St Lawrence Cof E Primary are all close by, and there are several other good quality primary schools in the town.

For older pupils, Amery Hill Academy is rated good, with Eggar’s School rated ‘outstanding in all areas’ by Ofsted. Alton College separates sixth form education in the town, smoothing the transition to university or work.

Private education is provided by Alton Convent School, which is open to boys 3-11 and girls 3-18. The school enjoys a magnificent 19 acre site to the north of the town.

Leisure

There is plenty to do in and around Alton, from sports to culture to outstanding scenery. Alton Sports Centre is close to the development, offering the chance to swim or visit the gym, while golfers can enjoy the challenge of three great courses at Alton, Worldham and Blacknest golf clubs.

For evening entertainment head for the shows of the Holybourne Theatre, or support your independent local cinema at the Palace. You can also enjoy a varied programme at Wessex Arts at Alton College during term time.

Out and about there is endless delightful countryside to explore, with nearby Chawton Park Wood, Alton Abbey and Jane Austen’s House all worth investigating.

Shopping

Alton has held a market in the town since the days of the Domesday Book, and continues the tradition to this day every Tuesday on the High Street, along with a farmers market on the second Saturday of the month. The town also boasts a wide selection of shops and stores, from major national names to local independents.

For a more comprehensive shopping spree, head for Festival Place in Basingstoke, The Brooks in Winchester or The Friary Centre in Guildford.

Transport

Alton sits on the main A31 trunk road, with the A339 passing to the south and the M3 also within easy reach. Farnham is 9miles, Basingstoke 12miles, Winchester 16miles and Guildford 20miles. London is around 50miles, with the international flights of Heathrow just over 40miles and Gatwick 55miles.
