The village name of Sutton Courtenay is derived from the word -Sutton- meaning -south town- (i.e. south of the town of Abingdon) and the name -Courtenay- - the family who took on the local manor in about 1177. Indeed, the village is so steeped in history that Tony Robinson-s Time Team visited the area to investigate remains linking back to Saxon royalty.
