On the banks of the River Wyre, McCarthy Stone is planning 14 stylish retirement bungalows. A fantastic place to live, in 2008 Garstang was voted the best town in Europe (being awarded gold in the highly respected Entente Florale competition). From its fascinating heritage to its stunning countryside surroundings, this historic Lancashire market town has so much to offer over-50s looking for hassle-free homeownership.

These bungalows will give you the chance to downsize, freeing you from the burdens of the upkeep of a large family home. But you won`t feel like you`re sacrificing anything. Smart design will be used to maximise space and light, with all bungalows benefiting from private outdoor areas, sleek and contemporary bathrooms and high-spec kitchens and appliances.

Low maintenance is a key part of our Lifestyle Living service. Your service charge will cover aspects such as buildings insurance, maintenance of communal areas, water and sewerage costs, window cleaning and equipment such as security systems. So, with all this taken care of, you`ll have more free time to enjoy the things you love.

The bungalows will be situated within walking distance (just 6 minutes) of the wide variety of amenities available in Garstang town centre and just 2 minutes` walk from the Lancaster Canal towpath. In addition to a wide range of shops, including a choice of supermarkets, many independent boutiques and several local delis and food producers, Garstang is home to various banks, healthcare facilities and hair and beauty salons. Plus, you`ll find a wide range of eateries, from coffee shops and tea rooms to first-class restaurants and pubs.

As well as benefiting from car parking, the bungalows will have easy access to public transport. In addition to regular bus services both south into Preston and north towards Lancaster, the A6 and M6 are both close by.

Local Area

Garstang is proud of its heritage. As well as being mentioned in the Domesday Book (as Cherestanc), there has been a weekly market held in Garstang since 1310, which still runs to this day. Head to the High Street on Thursdays to find a wide range of stalls selling everything from books to plants and household goods to children`s clothing. What`s more, at Market House, browse stalls selling a wide range of local produce, from meats and cheeses to vegetables and confectionery.

Another of the town`s accolades is that it was the world`s first Fair Trade Town. A testament to the local community, in 2001, the mayor, all of the town`s schools and faith groups and 95% of all businesses in Garstang signed a pledge to buy and use Fair Trade and local produce. Now, following in Garstang`s footsteps, there are 2167 Fair Trade Towns around the world and counting - no small achievement for a humble Lancashire community.

What`s more, the Forest of Bowland sits on Garstang`s doorstep. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there is so much to do and see here, from the impressive castle at Hornby to the wide expanses of the Beacon Fell Country Park.

It is also home to the iconic Trough of Bowland, one of the most well-known stretches of countryside in Lancashire, and the circular walk known as the `Tolkien Trail`, which guides walkers through the landscapes that inspired the author during his regular visits here. Plus, for the foodies among you, the Inn at Whitewell isn`t one to be missed - as well as having won multiple awards, this hotel and restaurant was featured on The Trip with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.
