Sevenoaks commuter homes – what can you get for your money?

Posted 19 May 2015 by Keith Osborne

Home to a large commuting population, the attractive and affluent Kent hilltop town of Sevenoaks in the North Downs is only about 25 miles south of London – with handy mainline trains whipping commuters to and from their desks in the capital in less than half an hour.

Hefty house prices in the heart of Sevenoaks price many buyers out of the market, but for those with fewer financial constraints – or buyers willing to live just a couple of miles from the centre – there are plenty of options.

Commuter ease

Sevenoaks has two railway stations in the town and two on the outskirts. The main station, however, acts as the terminus for the suburban stopping services to both London Charing Cross and Blackfriars. There are very frequent trains from Sevenoaks to London Bridge, with the journey taking about 30 minutes, or to London Waterloo East in as little as 27 minutes.

An annual season ticket to London zones 1-6 costs £3,944. There are a couple of car parking options at the station run by Meteor Parking Ltd, including a Car Park 4 with 528 spaces and an annual charge of £1,503, or Car Park 1 with 135 spaces and an annual fee of £1,193.50. There are also cycle stands for 298 bikes with CCTV coverage.

By road, Gatwick or Dartford are only about 25 minutes away. The A21 bypasses the town and leads traffic to the M25 London Orbital motorway at Junction 5, while the A225 connects the town with Dartford and the cross-country A25 passes through the north of the town linking many key regional destinations.

Sevenoaks is home to several educational establishments for all ages, including several good state primary schools and the Knole Academy, an 11-19 all-ability school with a grammar stream. There are several private schools too, including the historic Sevenoaks School, situated on an attractive 100-acre campus adjoining Knole Park, where in 2013 pupils' achievement and learning was described as 'exceptional' by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.
