By some way Scotland’s largest city (around 600,000 people, with Edinburgh following at 470,000), all eyes were on Glasgow in 2014 as it hosted the Commonwealth Games. The event was a focal point for numerous projects around the city, including Clyde Gateway, which provided the athlete’s village which has been transformed into a 700-home riverside residential scheme.
Investment specialists JLL reported in late January 2015 that confidence has returned to the residential apartment market in some parts of the city, in particular the West End and prime areas of the South Side. House prices increased by over 8% in 2014 and rental values rose by more than 10%. The city’s suburbs have also witnessed significant development activity.
JLL forecasts that city centre prices will rise by around 3% in 2015 and by around 16.5% over the next five years.
Other major projects taking place around Glasgow include Clyde Waterfront, transforming 20km of historic riverside land; Glasgow Harbour, where £1.2bn of investment would build a new mixed-use scheme; the regeneration of its Canal Corridor to create new residential and ‘creative’ quarters; and new neighbourhoods taking shape in Oatlands, Garthamlock, Drumchapel and Nitshill.
