Property Match of the Day – Southampton v Everton preview
If you were a top professional footballer earning thousands of pounds a week, what kind of new home would you buy? That’s what the Whathouse.com team asked themselves ahead of one of the most exciting games taking place in the second week of the new Premier League season, when Everton visit St Mary’s to play Southampton in the early kick-off this Saturday.
Ronald Koeman’s boys are by far the top side on the South Coast right now, having surprised almost everyone last season by not just surviving without some of the top players they lost in the summer of 2014, but thriving. His new squad even qualified for the Europa League, which will have increased the team’s appeal to players looking to move this summer.
The team’s new training facility is on the edge of the New Forest and this scenic area has many luxury homes, with a steady stream of new build homes replacing some of the more dilapidated period properties. It’s a sought-after area, so the homes here are expensive, not that that’s a problem for the first-team regulars. New signing Jordy Clasie, purchased for around £7m from Dutch side Feyenoord, has some delightful villages and secluded plots to choose from that should be within easy reach of daily training and the home ground.
For Everton’s players, the North West of England has its own property hotspots, places such as Bowdon, Formby, Knutsford and Woolton, all of which are peppered with the homes of Merseyside’s top footballers. Among their new names is Spanish 21-year-old Gerard Deulofeu, who has joined the club from Barcelona for £4.2m. Initially signed up for three years, he may decide to put down some permanent roots in a chic new property, complete with all the latest home technology.
Here are the new homes selections we’ve found to appeal to these star players...
For the Southampton team...
Nautica, Milford-on-Sea, Hampshire (Pennyfarthing Homes) - £1.65million
This waterside development of just four homes won a Bronze for Best Luxury Development at the 2014 WhatHouse? Awards and now, only Plot 4 remains for sale, a four-bedroom, four-bathroom home designed and fitted to the highest level, and with only a footpath separating the garden from the beach.
Like its neighbours, this property has the bedrooms on the lower story, leaving the living room and kitchen/dining room to enjoy the elevated position and unbroken views out across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. There’s a very large terrace to really make the most of the outdoors and the stunning seascape.

For the Everton team...
Victoria Road, Freshfield, Liverpool (Colette Gunter) – £1.399million
Just 40 minutes’ drive from the Everton training academy, this three-storey home on ‘Millionaires’ Row’ was completed last year and as you’d expect in such a prestige location, the interior specification is really impressive.
There’s a large bespoke kitchen which opens out onto a spacious family/dining area and there’s also a bespoke staircase up from the welcoming hallway. Upstairs, the master bedroom naturally has an en suite and dressing room. There are four further bedrooms, one with an en suite, and a sixth bedroom that could function as a comfortable home office.
The property is set in established south-facing rear gardens and is accessed via electrically controlled gates.
