In Focus: Haslemere, Surrey

Posted 11 March 2015 by Keith Osborne

This week our focus turns to Haslemere in Surrey. This historic market town has become a popular hotspot on the commuter belt map, which has helped drive property prices up in recent years. James Clare of Keats estate agents gives us the lowdown on the town.

Overview

Haslemere is a picturesque, bustling market town situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Surrey/Sussex/Hampshire borders. Residents enjoy an excellent quality of life, from young professionals and families to couples and retirees. Many move from London to seek country living, a stress free environment and more value for their money, yet still be within an hour of the city.

Properties

Types of property in the surrounding villages range from traditional English cottages and equestrian dwellings to beamed barns and farmhouses. Properties in the pretty town centre range from new-build developments and Victorian and Georgian townhouses and beamed flats, which sit nicely above the independent shops, to a mix of contemporary and traditional luxury apartments and penthouses at Lythe Hill Park.

Shopping

There are two main shopping areas in Haslemere - the High Street and Weyhill, which is only a two-minute drive away. One of the many joys of Haslemere is how close the communities are, which is reflected in the interesting array of independent shops.

Top streets

At the higher end of the property market the most sought-after streets are those with grand family houses, close to the station. These include Tennyson’s Lane, Weydown Road and Three Gates Lane. Park Road and Hill Road are popular in the mid-tier market due to the choice of large 1920’s family homes. Lythe Hill Park is also popular due to its range of luxury apartments, houses and cottages. Meanwhile Lion Lane and Kings Road are most popular with first-time buyers and investors.

Leisure

Haslemere and its surrounding area boast a number of leisure centres and sporting venues as well as spas for those who enjoy a relaxed break. Old Thorns Golf and Country Club and Champneys offer health and spa facilities and are a 15-minute drive away.

Schools

Parents have plenty of excellent state and private primary/secondary schools to choose from. Primary include Camelsdale, St Bartholomew’s, Highfield & Brookham and Barrow Hills. Secondary includes Bohunt, King Edwards and The Royal School. The well-known private schools of Charterhouse, St Catherine’s and Cranleigh are a short drive away.

Transport

There are regular train services directly into London Waterloo that take less than an hour. There is also easy access to the A3 and the Coast.
