Toast National Beer Day with a brewery-linked brand new home

Posted 15 June 2016 by Keith Osborne

A number of new homes developments have a direct link with breweries and pubs and we take a look at some on Beer Day Britain...

Today (15 June 2016) is Beer Day Britain, a good reason, if any were needed, to consider ale’s place in our national history and the renaissance of brewing and growing popularity of ‘craft beers’ – and their link to a number of new homes developments currently on the market.

Some of the hundreds of pubs we are losing every year are being converted into private homes, or their sites re-purposed for new homes development.

Thankfully, there are exceptions. The WhatHouse? team had a great tour around Deptford recently, where LendLease is building some 1,100 new homes at its Timberyard development  but retaining an historic pub, the Victoria, initially as a business hub, but with hopes that it will eventually revert to its original role.

There are currently other developments under way with a close connection to ale:

Brewery Wharf, Twickenham (St James)

Brewery WharfLocated in the heart of the town, just a stone’s throw from the train station, Brewery Wharf comprises 82 apartments and 28 four- and five-bedroom family homes, set within a gated mews with secluded gardens and balconies.

The Cole and Co brewery, established in the early 1600s by Thomas Cole, once sat on the site. Historic mapping shows that the brewery, which was later renamed Brandon’s Brewery, remained in operation until the early 20th century when the land was purchased by the Borough Council.

Today, Brewery Wharf will not only provide new homes, but also two restaurants, a public piazza and a brand new cultural venue, adding to the already vibrant social scene of the area.

With excellent schools, beautiful riverside walks and green open spaces including Marble Hill and Richmond Park nearby, Twickenham is an ideal location for young, professional couples and families alike.

Prices start for a four-bedroom townhouse, to be completed by end of 2016: From £1.45m

The Ram Quarter, Wandsworth (Greenland Group)

The Ram QuarterThe Ram Quarter will provide 661 new homes on the site of the former Ram Brewery (most recently run by Young’s, until the brewery’s closure in 2006) at the heart of the Wandsworth Gyratory, close to the town’s shops amenities and stations.

In addition to a landmark residential tower and substantial space for new shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, this development will restore and refurbish many of the site’s historic, as well as a new micro-brewery within The Ram Heritage Centre.

The micro-brewery, an essential component of the scheme, highlights and maintains the Ram Quarter’s status as the longest continuously brewing site in Britain, with porter, stout and then beer brewed on site since 1533, and possibly even earlier.

The first phase of the development will include 312 studio, one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments and duplexes across six new low- and medium-rise buildings. Prices currently start at £485,000 and there will be 248 underground car parking spaces available for separate purchase. Completion is scheduled for 2017.

Residents will enjoy shared gardens, public squares, views of the River Wandle and dining and shopping on their doorstep.
