Escaping London for Basildon gives Essiens more space and privacy

Posted 29 November 2016 by Ben Salisbury

Lang and Ann Essien have switched from a flat in Peckham to a new four-bedroom detached Redrow home in Basildon and love the extra space!

Leaving London for a new life in leafy Essex is a dream that’s coming true for Lang and Ann Essien, who are looking forward to having extra space in their brand new Redrow home.

The couple are moving up the housing ladder from a former council flat near Peckham to a spacious four-bedroom home at St Nicholas Mews in Basildon.

After living in a much smaller third floor flat, they’re looking forward to having three floors of living space all to themselves in the York style property they’ve chosen.

Lang, 50, is a supervisor on the London Underground, and his wife Ann, 52, is a senior staff nurse. They both work shifts and so the ease of maintenance that a new build home offers suits their lifestyle.

“We’re really proud to think that because the house is brand new we will be the first people to live in it,” Lang says.

“It’s something we’ve always dreamed of. We’re very, very happy to have been able to secure a property from Redrow.”

In their current home there’s insufficient storage, no designated parking and, because it’s on the third floor with no lift, carrying shopping up the stairs can be difficult.

“What really appealed to us about the York was how spacious it is because the house is set out over three floors,” Lang explains.

“All of the rooms - the living room, kitchen/dining room, plus the bedrooms, are a good size and are bigger than in some detached houses we looked at.

“Plus, because the master bedroom with en-suite is on the top floor it gives us more privacy, especially when our children are home from university. At the moment in the flat we have to queue up for the bathroom in the mornings. When we move the children will be able to use the family bathroom on the first floor and guests can use the ground floor cloakroom.”

Other features include a lovely open plan kitchen and dining room to the rear of the house.  The move will give the Essiens their own garden, plus garage and access to additional outside space.

“We fell in love with the area because of the green space,” Lang adds. “The development is in a fantastic area with lots of open space – it’s not crowded like London, it’s much more peaceful.”

But if they ever do miss the capital, it’s only around 35 minutes by train from Laindon station, which has parking for 240 cars.

Lang and Ann are due to move into their new home in the spring, but in the meantime are enjoying being able to customise the property.

They’ve praised the Redrow team for their support, particularly sales consultant Gary Cleaver: “We can’t thank Gary enough – he made us feel so comfortable that when we met him for the first time it felt we already knew him because he was so approachable and knowledgeable,” Lang adds.

St Nicholas Mews offers a choice of four-bedroom homes from Redrow’s Heritage Collection. A four-bedroom 'York', similar to Lang and Ann’s is available from £426,995. You can visit the show home, open daily from 10.00am to 5.30pm.
