Couple set down foundations in 'hipster central' - Deptford

Posted 5 December 2016 by Ben Salisbury

Hamish Hossack and IIona Smyth have bought there first home in Deptford through Anthology whose development at Deptford Foundry is ideal for commuters

Deptford has recently been described as London’s ‘hipster central’ with people across the Capital attracted to the many qualities of the area.

However, first-time buyers Hamish Hossack, 26 and Ilona Smyth, 24, have been well aware of the Zone 2 qualities for some time, following Ilona’s attendance at nearby Greenwich University. The couple decided to permanently relocate there over two years ago from Surrey to be closer to work.

Working as a web developer in Central London, Hamish explains: “Like many commuters, getting to and from the office each day has been one of the many reasons that initially drew us to Deptford and why we have now decided to put our roots down here. With a Zone Two postcode, Deptford is a dream for commuting in to central London each day. The transport links mean we can get in to all sides of town from just one station.”

Situated on Arklow Road, Deptford Foundry is less than a ten-minute walk from both New Cross station and Deptford High Street with direct connections to London Bridge (6 mins), Cannon Street (13 mins) and Greenwich (12 mins).

Hamish and Ilona have purchased a three-bedroom apartment at Deptford Foundry, although this isn’t what they had initially set out to find: “We were originally looking to buy a two-bedroom apartment as this was within our budget. However, it is great we have been able to upsize slightly, meaning we have that extra space for entertaining when friends and family come to stay.”

Hamish continues: “There are a number of new developments being built in Deptford and we viewed around four or five prior to purchasing at Deptford Foundry. No other developer was able to quite meet the mark – either by location or just lack of benefits. Anthology stood out.”

Deptford Foundry comprises one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments; the development is situated on a former trading estate, backing onto the railway arches under the Deptford Railway Viaduct, on the Greenwich London Bridge Line.

Hamish says: “We were really impressed by the design at Deptford Foundry which is instantly visible when you enter the show apartment through the network rail arches. The apartments all have large doors and tall ceilings, with the added benefit of a balcony which all utilise the space available.”

The first development for Anthology, Hamish said of his experience: “We have been impressed by how quickly everything has been completed by Anthology. The team on site are helpful and we would definitely recommend them. Due to the build programme, we won’t be moving in until 2018 however the team have welcomed us back at any time – we have even brought our family and friends back to show them around!”

Although transport links were important to Hamish, the location also fits with the couple’s sporty lifestyle: “We like to lead quite an active lifestyle which is well accommodated as Greenwich Park is just a 20 minute walk away. There is also an impressive skate park just a short walk from Deptford Foundry and although I haven’t skated for many years, I am quite keen to give it a go!”

Having rented just a short distance from Deptford Foundry for over two years, Hamish and Ilona are both excited to take their first step on to the property ladder and embrace all the benefits that come with owning your own home: “It will be great to have a blank canvas and get started on the interiors and designs that we want.”
