Barratt Homes hosts the very last football match at West Ham’s former stadium

The national housebuilder oversees a charity event the day before development starts on 842 new homes in the London Borough of Newham...

With the final league match played there in May, it is Barratt Homes who will host the last football to be played at West Ham United’s former home, the Boleyn Ground, with a charity five-a-side tournament tomorrow (Tuesday 27 September).

Before it redevelops the ground into a brand new residential scheme to be called Upton Gardens, Barratt London will see 24 teams take part in a match for the benefit of three charity organisations: Children of Heroes, focused on educating and mentoring the children of fallen servicemen and women; MacMillan Cancer Support; and The Silver Line, which operates the only free confidential helpline providing information, friendship and advice to older people.

The tournament is sponsored by Stanmore Contractors and BK Nolte Contracts, with Little Gem Catering providing the catering facilities at cost. Barratt will match the other funds raised by the event, up to £30,000.

Tom Olsen, finance director for Barratt London, says: “The entire team involved in redeveloping Upton Park recognises the heritage embedded here and we are keen to mark the start of its new era with an event that will benefit a variety of charitable causes.”

Demolition of the site begins the following day, 28 September, with the housebuilder starting work on 842 new homes, of which 25% (211 homes) will be ‘affordable’. These new homes will be spread over 15 building and include a wide variety of studios, apartments and duplexes with one to four bedrooms, alongside a number of residents’ amenities. Sales for this new development are scheduled to start in January 2017.
