Taking inspiration from local history, The Nightingales is named after a poem 'The Nightingale's Nest' by John Clare (1793-1864). Regarded by many as one of the greatest of the English poets, John Clare lived in the village for his first forty years from 1793 until 1832. The thatched cottage where he was born has been restored using traditional building methods and is open to the public. St Botolph's church is also very much part of Helpston's community and it's here that John Clare was buried in 1793.
The village has all you need for everyday living with a convenience store, Post Office a well regarded pub and farm shop.??For the green fingered there is the friendly, family run Helpston Garden Centre. All your weekly shopping is catered for as The Nightingales is just 5 miles from a Tesco superstore, and further afield Peterborough, Spalding and Stamford provide larger centres for further choice.
The local area has plenty for the whole family to do whatever the weather. Head to the coast for a spot of rock pooling, visit a farm park, or explore the stunning walks around nearby Rutland Water Nature Reserve. Closer to home Deepings Leisure Centre has two swimming pools, squash courts, outdoor grass pitches, an all weather pitch, seasonal tennis courts, sports halls and fitness suites. For teenagers, nearby Market Deeping is home to Woody Heights, a newly-build skate park and BMX track.??
