Fate takes a hand in downsizing house hunt

According to research from Lloyds Bank earlier this year, nearly half of people planning to move in the next three years say they are aiming to downsize. David and Pauline Acton were part of that demographic...

Deciding to downsize is a big decision and occasionally it can be a fraught one. David and Pauline Acton took the plunge and, despite suffering more than their fair share of frustration, they believe fate played a hand in leading them to Redrow’s Erskine Park in Wilton.

Late in 2014, the couple who have been married for 44 years, decided to take the plunge and sell their four-bedroom detached home in Cheshire and head south to be nearer their family. David had retired from the construction and roofing industry, and Pauline, has worked in the travel industry for the last twenty years.

Over a period of twelve months, David and Pauline saw ten different potential homes. They were particularly looking for a new build house, having bought two brand new homes before.

David says their first four attempts to buy a home ended in frustration: “Each time we found a new home we liked, we were ready to go ahead but unfortunately problems cropped up with the sale of our existing house. It happened four times. It was very frustrating.”

In 2015 the couple travelled down to Wilton to look at Erskine Park and this time, fate was smiling on the couple. The sale of their Cheshire home went through, freeing them to buy their new Redrow home at Erskine Park.

Erskine Park is located in Wilton, an old market town to the west of Salisbury, just an hour and a half from London by train and minutes from the beautiful rolling hills and vales of rural Wiltshire.

The development itself has been built in an elegant Regency style and is modelled on the homes of wealthy Georgian merchants. The classic exteriors contrast beautifully with the contemporary space and design of the interiors.

David says the move went smoothly and they have settled in well: “We moved into our three-bedroom home on the Erskine Estate in December last year and are particularly delighted with the quality of build and the attention to detail of our home. The development is outstanding and in keeping with the local area. Not only is it close to all Wilton and Salisbury’s facilities, but it’s just thirty minutes from the family.”

So David and Pauline’s house hunt ended happily: “In hindsight everything that had happened before we came to Redrow was for the best because we have the house that is right for us. We are now looking forward to enjoying our new home and enjoying retirement.”

Erskine Park is a collection of two-, three- and four-bedroom homes and apartments situated in the market town of Wilton. Prices currently start from £180,950 for a two-bedroom home.

Wilton offers welcoming pubs, convenience stores and supermarkets, a historic weekly farmers market and a shopping village.

For countryside lovers, Erskine Park is also on the doorstep of the New Forest and South Downs National Park a short drive away. For a touch of history - Wilton House, with 21 acres of magnificent landscaped gardens around the classic 17th century country house is short walk from the development and Stonehenge is just 11 miles away.
